Titanium Burr Scrap refers to the byproduct or waste material produced during the machining or fabrication process of titanium parts. Burrs are small, jagged pieces or projections of material that remain on the surface of titanium components after processes like drilling, cutting, grinding, or turning. These burrs can form at the edges or holes of titanium parts and must be removed to ensure a smooth and precise finish. However, the titanium burrs themselves are valuable scrap material that can be recycled and repurposed.

Ti-6Al-4V (UNS designation R56400), also sometimes called TC4, Ti64,[1] or ASTM Grade 5, is an alpha-beta titanium alloy with a high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance. It is one of the most commonly used titanium alloys and is applied in a wide range of applications where low density and excellent corrosion resistance are necessary such as e.g. aerospace industry and biomechanical applications (implants and prostheses). Studies of titanium alloys used in armors began in the 1950s at the Watertown Arsenal, which later became a part of the Army Research Laboratory.[2][3] A 1948 graduate of MIT, Stanley Abkowitz (1927-2017) was a pioneer in the titanium industry and is credited for the invention of the Ti-6Al-4V during his time at the US Army’s Watertown Arsenal Laboratory in the early 1950s.[4] Titanium/Aluminum/Vanadium alloy was hailed as a major breakthrough with strategic military significance. It is the most commercially successful titanium alloy and is still in use today, having shaped numerous industrial and commercial applications. This alpha-beta alloy is the workhorse alloy of the titanium industry. The alloy is fully heat treatable in section sizes up to 15mm and is used up to approximately 400°C (750°F). Since it is the most commonly used alloy – over 70% of all alloy grades melted are a sub-grade of Ti6Al4V, its uses span many aerospace airframes and engine component uses and also major non-aerospace applications in the marine, offshore and power generation industries in particular.

Prior to the development of improved extraction techniques in the 1940’s, the presence of relatively small amounts of impurities such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen, which dissolve in and tend to embrittle the material, had prevented its commercial exploitation.
